Omnom Papua New Guinea 70%

There's so much going on in my life at the moment and much of it luckily has to do with chocolate. The downside is that it's been ages (1,5 months) since my last review. Now I finally have some time to sit down, relax, (hopefully) enjoy and tell you what I think of this chocolate.

These Omnom cardboard wrappers are totally out of this world. I love them! The angular shapes of the polar bear (?) looks incredible and goes well with the wolf (?) that Omnom has in their logo. However, the bar itself is almost as plain as can be. I realize that the form and shape of the pieces might not be the most important thing in any chocolate, but nice is nice and ordinary is ordinary. Appearancewise I'll give this a 10/10 for the packaging and a 6/10 for the bar.

The aroma of this chocolate is powerful and it goes well with my current hometown history. Tar used to be a big thing here in Oulu back in the day. I don't know how well my international audience is familiar with tar, but when I was growing up in the 70's there was tar (aroma) in shampoo, candy and what have you. In small amounts it's a nice aroma, but it easily becomes overwhelming and with this chocolate I find it very close to the border of almost too much. Tobacco is mentioned by the maker as one flavour and I think that it can easily be found in the aroma as well. This is truly powerful stuff as far as the aroma goes.

The upside of such small pieces is that it's easy to break off one piece and let it melt on your tongue. And this melts nicely. It needs a little push in the form of a warm tongue and palate but nothing major. The chocolate is not the smoothest kind I ever tasted, but quite close. When melting, the chocolate doesn't form a thick, sticky cocoa liquid like some chocolates do. Instead this just evenly spreads around my mouth delivering flavours all around.

The most important thing about any chocolate is of course the taste. Even if this chocolates aroma was very strong and almost overwhelming, the taste is fortunately not. Especially after one or two pieces. The taste changes from overwhelming to interesting and alluring. I don't really taste the tar from the aroma and neither do I taste the tobacco. What I do taste is very slight fruityness and leather, the latter of which the maker of the chocolate also mentions. There are many flavours that I can't really put my finger on, but none of them are negative. There is not much bitterness to speak of. Good things came to him, who was able to see and taste beyond the strong aroma.

The aftertaste is surprisingly mild. It is definetly not bland, but compared to the aroma and taste the aftertaste lets you go with a smile on your face. A mild smoky flavor is the last thing I taste, because I ate the whole 60g bar while writing this review.

Elämässäni tapahtuu juuri nyt monenlaista. Haittapuolena sisällöllisellä elämällä on kuitenkin se, että en ole aikoihin (1,5 kk) kirjoittanut laadukkaasta suklaasta arviota. Nyt minulla on aikaa istahtaa, rentoutua ja (toivon mukaan) nauttia suklaasta kertoen samalla mielipiteeni siitä.

Nämä Omnomin pahviset suklaakääreet ovat kyllä uskomattoman kauniita! Kulmikas jääkarhu (?) näyttää loistavalta ja sopii hyvin yhteen firman logossa komeilevan kulmikkaan suden (?) kanssa. Valitettavasti itse suklaalevy ei ole yhtä tyylikäs. Vaikka suklaapalasten muoto ei kenties olekaan suklaan tärkein ominaisuus on tyylikäs aina tyylikäs ja tavis on tavis. Kääreet ansaitsevat 10/10 mutta suklaalevy vain 6/10.

Suklaassa on todella voimakas tuoksu ja tuoksu sopii hyvin yhteen nykyisen kotikaupunkini historian kanssa. Täällä Oulussahan on joskusmuinoin tuotettu tervaa ja sille tämä suklaa tuoksuu. Mieleen tulee tervashampoo ja tervaleijonat, joita kumpiakin taitaa vielä tänäkin päivänä löytyä kaupoista. Tervan ongelma on minusta se, että pieninä määrinä ja satunnaisesti se tuoksuu hyvältä. Kun sitä sitten on runsaammin, alkaa haju jo muuttua lähes vastenmieliseksi. Vähän sama juttu kun nuotiolla istuessa savu tuoksuu hyvälle, mutta seuraavana päivänä samalle savulle haisevat vaatteet ei. Tämän suklaan tuoksussa tervaisuus menee melkein överiksi. Valmistaja mainitsee suklaasta löytyvän myös tupakan makua, mutta minusta se löytyy jo tuoksusta. Poikkeuksellisen voimakastuoksuinen suklaa.

Vaikka aiemmin moitin suklaalevyn ulkoasua, on pienten peruspalasten imeskely kuitenkin helppoa. Suklaa sulaa mukavasti suussa, kunhan sille ensin antaa vähän kielen ja kitalaen lämpöä. Suklaa ei ole kaikista silein suklaa, joka vastaan on tullut, mutta aika lähellä. Poikkeuksena joistakin muista tummista suklaista tämä ei sulaessaan muutu paksuksi, joka paikkaan tarttuvaksi suklaanesteeksi. Tämä vain sulaa ja levittää makua jokaiseen suun kolkkaan.

Olipa suklaa mikä tahansa, niin sen tärkein ominaisuus on tietenkin maku. Vaikka tämän suklaan tuoksu oli melkein liian voimakas, ei sama onneksi tarvitse sanoa mausta, varsinkaan sen jälkeen kun suu on palan tai kahden jälkeen tottunut tähän. Maku on itse asiassa kiinnostava ja jollakin tavalla koukuttavakin. Vaikka tuoksussa oli selvästi tervaa, en löydä sitä mausta, kuten en tupakkaakaan. Sen sijaan maistan varsin lievän hedelmäisyyden ja nahan, joista jälkimmäisen valmistajakin on ilmoittanut löytyvän. Suklaasta löytyy itse asiassa monia makuja, mutta niiden nimeäminen on todella vaikeaa. Pääasia, että mikään niistä ei ole negatiivinen. Liiallista kitkeryyttäkään suklaassa ei ole. Onneksi en säikähtänyt voimakasta tuoksua, sillä muutoin tämä maku olisi jäänyt kokematta.

Jälkimaku on yllättävän mieto. Se ei ole pliisu, mutta verrattuna tuoksuun ja makuun, päästää jälkimaku makustelijan helpolla. Viimeinen maku joka suusa tuntuu on savun. Viimeinen, koska söin tätä arviota kirjoittaessa koko 60g levyn.

The pattern on the paper wrapper looks like something I would see at a science fair. It's sort of 3D but not quite. Doesn't really give a very strong sense of a chocolate bar at a glance. The choclate bar itself is as basic as possible. Small pieces, no engravings or anything on the pieces.

There is a very strong aroma in this chocolate. I'm smelling at least raisin and maybe some other dark fruit as well. I would almost call this aroma extreme.

To my disappointment I notice the chocolate texture being floury. Because this is not the first floury or even grainy chocolate I come across, I have to ask the question "Does somebody really enjoy chocolate that is not smooth?" Apparently somebody does, because why else would such chocolate be made? I'm not one of those that do.

If the aroma was strong, wait until you get a taste of this chocolate. The taste might even be stronger of the two. This really tastes the same as it smelled like and there is a lot of raisin flavour. In addition to the raisin I almost taste tar. This is definetly not a chocolate for those who are just getting to know the world of dark chocolates, because it might scare someone off and back to the world of milk chocolate (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I taste bread in the aftertaste. Why am I tasting bread in my mouth after just having eaten chocolate? The tar I tasted is also here in the aftertaste but the raisin has gone. I would call this aftertaste more to my liking than the actual flavour of the chocolate.
